I
German
I is an academically challenging course. German
is intended as a two-year course (college
requirement). It is recommended that students
have a C+ or better average in language-related
classes. Ninth grade students should possess a
strong (B+ or better) English background. First
year German will introduce a basic vocabulary,
the sounds, the grammar, and structure of the
German language. Tapes, videos and cultural
materials are also used. By the end of the first
year students should be reading at an elementary
level.
German
II
German
II is a second year course offered as an
elective primarily for 10th through 12th grade
students. The four basic skills are emphasized
(speaking, reading, writing, and listening).
Role-playing and total physical response are
used to enhance the learning environment.
Intermediate level detective stories are read
during the second semester.
German
III
If
there are sufficient numbers, a separate 3rd
year German class will be offered. The text and
class will be exclusively in the German
language. The students will speak, read and
write fluently in German. Upon completion of 3rd
year German, students going to college should be
able to enter a 2nd year college course.
French
I
This
course is an academically challenging elective.
The prerequisite is a C+ average or better in
language-related subjects. Emphasis is placed on
listening, speaking, reading and writing, as
well as the culture of French-speaking
countries.
French
II
This
course continues and expands the language skills
initiated in the first year. French culture and
civilization are studied in more depth than in
the first year. Continued emphasis is placed on
speaking, writing, listening and reading.
French
III
This
course is designed to provide students with the
opportunity to use French in a variety of
capacities. Students will (a) reinforce their
language skills, (b) do both guided and
independent work with third year materials and
(c) work cooperatively with beginning students.
Continued emphasis is placed on speaking,
writing, listening, reading and the study of
French-speaking cultures.
Spanish
I
Student
must have a grade of "C+" or better in
the last English course completed. This course
is designed to develop basic skills in
listening, speaking, reading and writing the
language. Awareness of the Hispanic cultures,
and their similarities, differences, and
contributions to "American" culture is
also studied.
Spanish
II
This
course will emphasize further development of the
listening, speaking, reading and writing of the
language. It is also designed to promote greater
fluency in the spoken word and knowledge of the
Hispanic cultures.
Spanish
III
This
course is designed to increase the fluency of
Spanish in both written and spoken areas.
Students will improve upon their knowledge of
Spanish through reading, writing and speaking
exercises, as well as attending cultural
workshops, such as "Espanolandia" at
Northern Michigan University.
