American
History
Required
freshman level course. This course is a survey
of American history. Various materials and
techniques are used to give students ample
opportunity to express their interests,
attitudes, and abilities. This required subject
is designed to develop the student's
appreciation of the nation's background. A
research paper is required 2nd semester and an
oral report first semester.
World
Geography
A
required, sophomore level course. Focus will be
on the fundamental themes of geography. Students
will gain knowledge of regional and world
governmental organizations; cultural diversity
and unity of world societies; and the
influences, both positive and negative, of
various past and present cultures of the world
upon one another.
Government
The
purpose of this required, junior level course is
to acquaint the student with the concepts of
government on the federal, state, and local
levels. Opportunity is given to analyze,
discuss, and develop a practical philosophy of
citizenship in a democratic society.
World
History
An
examination of the political, economic, social,
cultural, and religious development of the
world's civilizations. The course objectives are
to encourage students to explore past
civilization so that they may form some
understanding of what caused past events and how
those events helped shape our current world
situation. The ultimate goal is to provide the
student with a perspective from which to develop
answers to the worlds problems and gain skills
necessary to anticipate future problems that may
arise.
Current
Events
This
course allows students to study contemporary
society with emphasis on problems that exist and
events that occur, and the people involved with
them. Individual and group work, teacher
directed but student conducted, will provide
opportunities to develop and demonstrate skills
at organization and expression, both oral and
written. This is intended as a junior/senior
level, college preparatory course for students
who have done well in previous social studies
courses.
Psychology
A
general course, open to juniors and seniors,
which defines the science of psychology, its
branches, and its applications. Units within the
course deal with such topics as: human growth
and development, theories of personality, the
learning theories and their applications, as
well as the types of emotional disorders and
their treatments. A research presentation is
required.
