As a student gains admission to a university or college, s/he may become eligible for specific scholarships sponsored by the respective school.  Please click here to learn how and where our scholarships are distributed.

Internal Scholarships and Loans

C. L. & Mary Phelps Scholarship                                 Click here for Renewal Form

Amount: To be determined by a scholarship committee. Renewable.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the C.L. Phelps Scholarship, students must have earned a 3.00 or above GPA during their first seven (7) semesters at Ishpeming High School. (Transfer students who meet the GPA requirements are eligible to apply.)

To become eligible for consideration for a C.L. Phelps scholarship renewal it is also necessary to request a current transcript of grades (including a cumulative GPA to date) from the college, university or school.

Applications for a Phelps Loan April be obtained in the Ishpeming Public Schools Superintendent’s Office. To apply for a loan a student needs to be accepted in a post-high school program (college, university, vocational school, etc.) The determination and amount of the loan is decided by a committee.

Eligibility: To be eligible for an Edward and Lillian Nolan Scholarship, students must have earned a 2.5 or above GPA during their first seven (7) semesters at Ishpeming High School. (Transfer students who meet the GPA requirement are eligible to apply.)

 

Anona Quayle Nursing Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

 

Amount:  $300.00

Eligibility:  Students must possess a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.50 or above on a four point scale, over their four years of high school.  Applicant must be pursuing either a registered or practical nursing degree with preference given to a student in Allied Health.  Factors that would be considered are the student's compassion, dedication, character, and commitment to a career in nursing.

Ben Renz Scholarship in English and Speech

Deadline: 3:15 PM on April 1st or on the preceding Friday if April 1st falls on a Saturday or Sunday.

 

Amount: Approx. $500.00

 

Eligibility: The scholarship is intended for a senior being graduated from the Ishpeming High School who will be attending a university (or four-year college) to pursue a degree in English or Speech Writing (Speech Communication, Theater, Mass Communication, Broadcasting, Public Relations or Journalism)

 

The student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the time of the award.

 

The primary criterion to be used in arriving at the successful applicant shall be potential to further the field of English through teaching or promise to contribute to the communications industry through professional application of the student’s skills or the teaching of communications (as defined above).

Beverly Perry Ladin Merit Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

 

Amount: The scholarship amount shall be $2,000 per year for a period of no more than four consecutive years. The yearly scholarship amount shall be paid at the end of each successfully completed academic semester or term. (Offered next in 2011 or when present recipient no longer qualifies.)

 

Eligibility: The recipient must be a female residing within the boundaries of the Ishpeming School District, who shall graduate in the top academic 1/3 of her high school graduating class. In determining the student who shall be awarded the scholarship, the scholarship committee shall use as criteria grades, difficulty of course study, the recommendation of the high school and citizenship. (This scholarship is offered every four years, unless the present recipient is disqualified.) The recipient’s financial need must be demonstrated.

 

When enrolled in a post-high school educational institution, the recipient must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0) and a full academic course load to continue to receive the scholarship amount. Should the recipient fail to maintain the minimum grade point average or full academic course load, the scholarship shall terminate. The recipient must provide the high school principal’s office with an official copy of the recipient’s transcript of grades at the conclusion of each semester or term.

 

Should the recipient be unable or unwilling to enter the freshman or initial semester or term, an alternate recipient shall then be awarded the scholarship subject to the terms as herein set forth.

 

If in the opinion of the scholarship selection committee no student meets the criteria herein established, then no scholarship will be awarded for that year and is to be made available for the following or later years.

C. Henry Seaborg Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

Amount: The amount of the grant shall be determined by the interest the original amount can accrue in a one year period. The original amount of $1,000 is to remain untouched so that this fund will be permanent and self-perpetuating and remain in effect for as long as possible and/or practical.

Eligibility: In order to be eligible, the recipient shall continue his/her education in a technically-related field of study. The Board of Trustees shall select an eligible recipient who will have demonstrated qualities of good character and citizenship. In event that there is no eligible candidate in a given year, more than one recipient may be given a grant in the following year or years. The grant shall be deposited by the Secretary-Treasurer of the Board at the school the recipient plans to attend. The student shall have met all entrance requirements and have been accepted at the school.

C. L. Phelps Prize

Amount: $500.00

 

Eligibility: The prize or prizes to be awarded on the basis of personal improvement during the high school course, industry, reliability, scholarship, moral character and the promise of becoming a useful citizen or citizens. The selection of the recipients of this award is to be made by the committee consisting of the Superintendent of Schools and two citizens of the community, one of whom shall be a man and the other a woman, said citizens to be selected by the Board of Education each year. The committee is to meet and make its selection on or before the first day of June of each year, and if in any year it may be deemed advisable to this committee that no award be made for such year, then the income of said fund for such year shall be added to the principal of this fund.

Clermont C. and Kathryn Watson Scholarship

Amount:  $1000

Eligibility:  Student must demonstrate good character, good citizenship, need, above average intelligence, a good scholastic record and have a recommendation from the Principal. 

Msgr. David Spelgatti Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

 

Amount: The amount of the scholarship has yet to be determined.

 

Eligibility:  Not known at this time.

Dee Brown Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

 

Amount: The amount of the scholarship grant shall be determined by the interest the deposit amount can accrue in a one year period.

 

Eligibility: The recipient must be a female student of the Ishpeming High School Senior Class who shall have been admitted to Northern Michigan University in a BA/BS program. The recipient must be going into an Education or Health Related Field. Education fields include Health, Physical Education and English. The Scholarship Selection Committee will consider citizenship, character, attendance and financial need into consideration when making the selection.

Duane Phillips Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

Amount: $200 in the form of a check made payable to the school, college or university of his/her choice to be used to help defray expenses.

Eligibility: The recipient must be a graduating senior from Ishpeming High School. The recipient must plan to attend a course or program of advanced study of at least two years duration. The recipient must have at least a 2.00 grade point average. The recipient must have participated in high school athletics at Ishpeming High School. (Cheerleading is not considered athletic participation for the purposes of this scholarship.)

Everett D. Austin Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

 

Amount:  $250.00

 

Eligibility: Student must be a graduating senior. The student must intend to pursue a career in accounting or business. The student must possess a 3.0 grade point average. Citizenship and financial need shall be considered.

Haney Memorial Scholarship (Haney Prize)

Deadline: April 1st

 

Amount: To be determined (renewable)

 

Eligibility: A member of the graduating class is selected based on the following criteria:

 

A.   The student must have a 3.0 grade point average through seven (7) semesters.

B.   The student must have demonstrated commitment, effort and interest in science.

C.   The student must complete each of the science courses available at the Ishpeming High School. At present this requirement includes Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Advanced Chemistry, Advanced Biology and Physics.

D.   The student must complete Algebra 3 and Trigonometry.

E.   The student must enroll in a baccalaureate science program or baccalaureate science related field at the college university level

Helen A. Bentley Memorial Music Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

Amount:  To be a minimum of $750 annually to the same student for four years (offered next in 2009).  The successful candidate must present valid enrollment forms/receipts from the school or camp they plan to attend to the superintendent’s office before receiving their scholarship check.

Applicant may be either a graduating senior or another student presently attending Ishpeming High School. The applicant must be enrolled in a music program/class. Final selection will be weighted in favor of the graduating senior.

Students must be planning to attend a non-profit school or camp pursuing advanced music education.

Candidates will be judged on musical background and interests, academic standing, and citizenship.  Candidates must be pursuing any of the four following areas:

  1. Voice training/development
  2. Choral music
  3. Piano accompanist
  4. Music directorship

A committee made up of the high school principal, guidance counselor, and two faculty members of the music department will choose the recipient of this award.

Ishpeming High School Alumni Association Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

Amount: The amount of the scholarship is expected to be $500.  The Board of Trustees of the Ishpeming High School Alumni Association may alter the amount of the award when they consider such action appropriate

Number of Scholarships Awarded:  Varies.  At least one scholarship shall be awarded annually.

Requirements:  In addition to completing the scholarship application, applicants must also include an official high school transcript and a personal essay.  Incomplete applications will NOT be considered.

Jacob B. and Sarah C. Casper Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st (Awarded 6/07, not available at this time)

Amount: Approximately $5,000/year for a period of not more than four (4) years

Grade point average of 3.0 or better, graduating senior, enrolled in a four year college or university and must maintain a GPA of 3.0 to continue to receive the scholarship amount.

The scholarship will not be available to any present Ishpeming High School Senior as long as a previous recipient is still meeting the terms and conditions set forth in the scholarship guidelines.

James F. Tobin, M.D. Bell Babies Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

 

Amount:  $500.00

 

Eligibility: Graduating senior from the Ishpeming High School, planning to attend Northern Michigan University and major in a medical related field. Also, must have been born at Bell Memorial Hospital.

Paul Valenti Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

 

Amount: The amount of the scholarship grant shall be 80% of the interest the deposit amount can accrue in a one year period. Approximately $1000.00.

 

Eligibility: The recipient must be a student of the Ishpeming High School Senior class who shall have been admitted to Northern Michigan University in a BA/BS program or Associate Program. The recipient must have a GPA of 2.5 or better. Preference will be given to applicants going into a communication field. The scholarship selection committee is to take citizenship, character, attendance and financial need into consideration when making the selection.

Pioneer Kiwanis Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

Amount: One Student-$200.00

Eligibility: Key Club advisor provides names of IHS Key Club seniors supported by each member’s activities during his/her membership in the club. (On or about April 1st). Information is then provided to a Pioneer Kiwanis Club appointee, one IHS Guidance Counselor, and the Ishpeming High School Principal. The three persons noted above will meet and determine the recipient of the Pioneer Kiwanis Scholarship.

William & Virginia Sawyer Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

 

Amount: $250.

 

Eligibility:  Good Student who has not yet received a scholarship or has only received the Phelps Scholarship.

Andy Nault Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

 

Amount:  $500.00

Eligibility: Ishpeming High graduating senior who will be attending a college or university . Applicants should have participated in athletics while at the Ishpeming High School. A 2.500 GPA or above is required.

Anna L. Tobin Scholarships (2)

Deadline:  April 1st

 

Amount:  $500.00 each

 

Eligibility:  Graduating seniors who plan to pursue a career in theater (drama), music (instrumental or vocal), or dance. Students will be judged on performing arts interests, academic standing, and citizenship (in that order).

Bernadette Reider Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

 

Amount:  Unknown

 

Eligibility:  Student must graduate from a Marquette County high school (there is only one award per year in the county).  Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or better, must be pursuing a career in nursing, must have involvement in extracurricular activities (in their community, church, and/or school).  Applicants will also be judged by financial need.  Preference will be given to students in ROTC.

Citizenship Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

 

Amount:  $500.00

 

Eligibility: Ishpeming students must have a record of outstanding citizenship and character and exhibit a financial need.. The student must have a minimum GPA of 2:00

Douglas and Elizabeth Larson Scholarship

Deadline: April 1st

 

Amount: $1,000.00

 

Eligibility:  The scholarship is intended to benefit a student who possesses a GPA of 2.00 or greater, exhibits financial need and outstanding character.

Edna Arseneault Scholarship 

Deadline:  April 1st

 

Amount:  $500.00

Eligibility:  This scholarship is intended to benefit a student who posses a GPA of at least 2.50 on a 4.00 scale and be of outstanding character.  This is a one year scholarship.  Preference will be given to those students who will be entering the field of education.  Applicants must also be accepted at a four-year college or university.

Fr. Vincent L. Ouellette Scholarship

Amount:  $500.00+

 

Eligibility:  Graduating senior of Ishpeming High School who is a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church or St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming.  A GPA of 2.2 or above is required.

Independent Order of Odd Fellows Turn-Around Scholarship

Deadline:  April 1st

 

Amount:  $500.00

 

Eligibility:  Students must possess a Grade Point Average (GPA) between 2.00 and 3.00 on a four point scale, over their four years of high school. A marked improvement in both academic performance and attitude during the students high school tenure must also be apparent in school records and accompanying testimony of school instructors and/or administrators.

Ishpeming High School Alumni Association Carolyn Lalas Music Scholarship

Amount:  $500.00

 

Eligibility: 

1.  Applicant may be either a graduating senior or another student presently attending Ishpeming High School. The applicant must be enrolled in a music program/class. Final selection will be weighed in favor of the graduating senior.

2.  Student must be planning to attend a non-profit school or camp pursuing advanced music education.

A.  Candidates will be judged on musical background and interests, financial need, academic standing and citizenship.

B.  The successful candidate must present valid enrollment forms to the Superintendent’s Office for the school or camp they plan to attend before receiving their scholarship check

Eligibility:  Students must possess a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.00 or above on a four point scale, over their four years of high school.  Students must show a financial need and exhibit good character.  Applicants must also be accepted at a four-year college or university.

Patricia S. DeVold Memorial Scholarship

Amount:  $500.00

 

Eligibility:  The student must be pursuing a career in education and possess a GPA of 2.80 or higher. Citizenship, active participation in community and school activities and volunteer involvement shall be considered in awarding the scholarship.

Stuart L. Sundblad Memorial Scholarship

Amount:  $500.00+

 

Eligibility:  Open to graduating seniors of Ishpeming or Westwood High Schools. Must have a minimum GPA of 2.50. Recipient must not be receiving more than fifty percent (50%) of the tuition fees and costs from scholarships.

Susan Chinn Scholarship

Amount:  $500.00

Eligibility:  This scholarship is intended to benefit a student who posses a GPA of at least 2.50 on a 4.00 scale and be of outstanding character.  This is a one year scholarship.  Preference will be given to those students who will be entering the field of education.  Applicants must also be accepted at a four-year college or university.

Walter J. Crimmins Scholarship

Eligibility:  Open to graduating senior of Ishpeming or Westwood High Schools for students entering the field of engineering or math. The student must possess a GPA of 2.50 or higher and be of good character.

(Doctor) William "Bee" Sivula Scholarship

Eligibility:  This scholarship is intended to benefit a student who posses a GPA of at least 2.00 on a 4.00 scale.  This is a one year scholarship.  Applicants must be accepted at a four-year college or university.

William & Jean Hocking Memorial Scholarship

Amount:  $500.00

Eligibility:  This scholarship is intended to benefit a student who posses a GPA of at least 2.00 on a 4.00 scale and be of outstanding character.  Applicants must provide the financial information that is requested on the application and must submit a handwritten 100 word (maximum) narrative on why they feel they are deserving of this scholarship.  Applicants must also be accepted at a four-year college or university.

External Scholarships 

Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Scholarship

Amount:  $500.00 (three scholarships in said amount)

 

Eligibility:  Applicant must be from the Upper Peninsula, must plan to attend a college, university or community college in Michigan. Minimum ACT score of 20, GPA of 3.0 or above.

Athena High School Scholarship Fund

Amount:  $1,000. More than one award may be granted annually, one-time, non-renewable

 

Eligibility:  Graduating seniors from Marquette County High Schools, record of outstanding service to others in the school and community throughout their school career, demonstrated leadership and initiative in developing creative opportunities for others to engage in school/community service, demonstrated skills in assisting others to develop their potential. Underclassmen should record evidence of community service as early as their freshmen year.

 

Selection Criteria:  Post graduate plans for continuing education; cumulative high school record of personal commitments to school and community service; verification of experiences related to school and community service; cumulative high school record representing outstanding citizenship; evidence of situations through which others have been personally impacted by the applicant; and quality of the completed application.

Elks Scholarship

Amount:  Varies - Once acknowledged at local level, then may go on to state level.

 

Eligibility:  Ishpeming High School senior who is a citizen of the United States. Financial need, leadership and scholarship are the criteria by which applicants will be judged.

 

Note: Local winners will then have an opportunity to compete at the state level.

Erin Lawson Memorial Nursing Scholarship

Ishpeming Blue Notes Scholarship

Eligibility:  Students will be recommended by a music teacher. Entering college as a music major with a high school grade point average of 2.0 or better.

Ishpeming Community Credit Union Scholarship

Eligibility:  The recipient must be a graduating senior with a GPA of at least 2.5 who is a member of the Ishpeming Community Federal Credit Union.

MEEMIC Foundation for the future of Education Scholarships

Amount:  Four-Year College recipients $1,000.00 annually

Community College recipients $500.00 annually

 

Eligibility:  Son or daughter of an educational employee or son or daughter of Michigan Educational Employees Mutual Insurance Company policy holder. Must be a Michigan resident. Must be a graduating high school senior in the current school year. Must be admitted to and will attend a college or university in the State of Michigan. Must maintain a GPA of 3.25 or better. Must exhibit involvement in student activities or community service. Must plan to be a full-time student at a 2 or 4 year college or university (for renewal consideration, community college recipients will transfer to a four-year college or university in the State of Michigan after two years. Community College recipients will receive $500.00 annually. Four-year college students will receive $1,000.00 annually.

NMU Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa Prospective Educator Scholarship
Deadline:  February 1st.

Eligibility:  High school seniors intending to major in education who are a member of a PDK sponsored FEA club at their high school or are the child or grandchild of a Kappan in good standing or have one of their reference letters written by a Kappan in good standing or whose application is selected to represent the PDK chapter in their area.

Richard M. Jopling Unit No. 44 - American Legion Auxiliary

Eligibility:  High School graduate accepted by a College, University or Trade School in Michigan. Applicant must also be a resident of Marquette County.

Robert Byrd Scholarship

Eligibility:  This is awarded to ten students per Congressional District. One applicant per school district for the amount. Awarded in May.

Sam Walton Community Leader Award

Amount:  $500.00 per semester

 

Eligibility:  Leadership skills, GPA, ACT score and financial need.

State of Michigan Competitive

Amount: $1,200 (average amount)

 

Eligibility:  Minimum Composite Score of 23 on ACT. 

TO RECEIVE A MONETARY AWARD, A DETERMINATION WILL BE MADE VIA THE FINANCIAL AID FORM BY THE STATE OF MICHIGAN SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE.

State of Michigan-Paul Douglas Teacher Scholarship Program

Eligibility: The applicant must plan on majoring in Education. Students who graduated in the top 10% of their class may apply.

Teal Lake Masonic Lodge

Deadline: April 1st

 

Amount:  Varies, scholarship is sent to the college.

 

Eligibility:  A graduating senior. Scholarship and leadership as demonstrated in school activities or outside school, and a statement in 250-300 words of vocational-professional goals.

Tracy Strom Memorial Award

Selection is made through a nomination process by the Ishpeming High School teaching staff. A committee makes the final selection based upon the guidelines set up for the award. The recipient receives a monetary award at the spring athletic awards program.
Vietnam Veterans of America
