Coach’s Corner: Erl Langness

Mr. Langness has been a staple of the Ishpeming Tennis scene since 1982, the first year of his tenure as the Girls coach. In 1983, the same school year, he became Boys coach as well, and has been doing it ever since. Under his command the Boys team has brought home four UP Titles, the most recent being in 1993. “I enjoy tennis, and I knew I was going into education, so I thought it would be fun,” he said. When asked who the best player he ever coached was, he said it would come down to a tie between Josh Kitto and Bryn Garrett, the respective No. 1 and 2 singles players from the 1993 championship team. “They were both so close, it’s really hard to pick between them,” said Coach. Recently his coaching career has entered a bit of a paradox, as both of his twin sons, Jon and Jeremy, are players for Westwood. Mr. Langness said that it becomes very hard to coach against one’s own blood. “As a parent, you take pride in your own kids, but as a coach, you have to use your knowledge of playing tennis with them for so long so that your players can learn their weaknesses and exploit them. You hope that your team wins the meet and that your kids win their individual match-ups, but of course it almost never works out that way.” We’d like to thank Mr. Langness for all his years of excellent coaching, and hope that he keeps up the good work.
