Healthier School Environment
Program
Phelps Middle School has been
chosen to participate in the Healthier School
Environment program funded in part by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture, and the Michigan
Dairy council. Throughout this academic school
year we will be sponsoring various activities
and programs to encourage students to make
healthy choices in their daily diet and
activities. Each month we will be providing
different recipes to inspire healthy eating
choices.
This month we are focusing on
“Celebrate Breakfast”. Did you know?:
-
A morning meal helps assure
optimal development and growth.
-
A balanced breakfast supports
improved alertness, attention, and academic
performance.
-
A regular breakfast habit may
decrease the risk of being overweight.
-
Include a good source of
protein for a more satisfying, long-lasting,
and nutritionally balanced breakfast rather
than an all-carbohydrate meal.
Here are some recipes that may
help us celebrate a healthier life.

Winter Season Announcement
With the winter season here, it is important
that parents make plans in the event that school
is canceled due to inclement weather. In
the event of school being cancelled early in the
morning, announcements will be made on radio
stations WJPD, WZAM, WKQS, WMJT, WNMU, WFXD,
WGLQ, WLUC TV-6 and WBKP TV-10. Every
effort will be made to make such an announcement
prior to 6:30 a.m. The announcement will
be posted on the District website at
www.ishpemingschools.com and the Mining
Journal website at
www.miningjournal.net .
It is also possible that, in the event of severe
weather moving into the area, students could be
dismissed after the school day has begun.
In such an event, radio and television
announcements will be made. It is very
important that you plan ahead in the event of an
early dismissal. If you are generally not
home during the day when school is in session,
please make arrangements for someone to be at
your home in the event of an early dismissal or
arrange for your child to go to another home.
It is important that parents make these
arrangements prior to the time that they may
actually be needed.
If you have questions regarding where your child
may go in the event of an early dismissal, you
may contact Principal Veale, Principal Willey,
or Principal Sarvello for assistance or
direction. If you have questions with
regard to cancellation or early dismissal
procedures, please feel free to contact
Superintendent Stephen Piereson at your
convenience.
